When a label carries a small blend weight and a big ingredient list, the manufacturer's best answer is the concentrate ratio. It is a real argument and it deserves to be run properly rather than dismissed. So here it is, run properly.
What 20:1 means
Twenty parts of raw plant material were processed down into one part of finished extract. Twenty kilograms of leaf in, one kilogram of extract out. So one milligram of a 20:1 extract derives from twenty milligrams of the original herb.
Publishing the ratio is a good sign. It tells you the material is a concentrate rather than milled leaf powder, and plenty of labels never say either way.
Running the argument fairly
Take a hypothetical 15 mg blend of twenty-one ingredients, averaging roughly 0.74 mg each, most marked 20:1. Multiply through:
- 0.74 mg of a 20:1 extract ≈ 14.8 mg of raw-herb equivalent.
- The whole blend, at 20:1 throughout, ≈ 309 mg of raw-herb equivalent — spread across twenty-one different plants.
So the ratio does real work. It turns a number that looked absurd into one that is merely small. That is a meaningful improvement and it should be acknowledged.
Where it stops helping
Three places, and they matter.
- The studies mostly used extracts too. This is the one that settles it. When a trial reports 300 mg of green tea extract, that is 300 mg of extract — itself a concentrate. Comparing a fraction of a milligram of extract against 300 mg of extract is the right comparison, and the ratio does not enter into it. Multiplying your side by twenty while leaving the study's side alone is the error to avoid.
- A ratio is not a standardisation. 20:1 tells you how much material went in, not how much of the active compound came out. Two 20:1 green tea extracts can differ several-fold in EGCG content. Standardisation — “50% EGCG” — is the figure that would let you compare, and it is rarer on labels than the ratio is.
- Ratios are not audited. There is no agreed standard for how a 20:1 is produced or verified. It is a manufacturer's description of its own process.
The honest summary
A published extract ratio is a point in a label's favour and should be read that way. It is not a multiplier you get to apply to your side of a comparison while the research keeps its own units. Where a blend total is a fraction of a single studied extract dose, the ratio narrows the gap in rhetoric and leaves it roughly where it was in fact.
The test that survives all of this is the one from the division piece: compare the whole blend total, in the units the label uses, against the studied dose in the units the study used. If the total falls short, nothing inside the blend can reach the studied amount, whatever the ratio says.
